In October of 1949, realizing the historical significance of the
Carson mansion to Eureka and Humboldt County, local businessmen J.H. Crothers
and Carl Gustafson secured the option to
purchase the Carson property from its owners. In an effort to preserve the mansion,
they envisioned the creation of a men’s club modeled after the long
established Humboldt Club of which William Carson was a founding member. The
purchase of the Carson mansion was
formally completed in May, 1950, and the Ingomar Club was born.
For over 70 years, the
Ingomar Club’s membership has maintained the mansion without the benefit of tax
credits, public funding, or grants. In 1988, Club members began a meticulous seven-year program of
recreation that reached around the globe to enable precise replications of the
original home. After careful work by master craftsmen, every architectural
detail of this 1886 mansion is not only intact, but pristine today.
To further preserve this treasure for the
enjoyment of future generations, the Carson Mansion Heritage Foundation was
established in 2020. Its primary purpose is to help preserve and protect the
Carson Mansion building and land, and any artifacts that may relate to its
history and architecture.
